* 1960~70년대에 활동하던 이들을 좋아하다 보면 '근황'이 궁금해지게 마련이다. 십여 년 전쯤까지는 그런 근황을 많이 찾아보았지만 요즘은 그러고 싶은 생각이 별로 들지 않는다. 특히 록스타들은... 자연스러운 일이라고 아무리 부인하려 해봐도 세월의 흔적을 무시할 수 없다. 기본적으로 젊은 사람들이 만들고 부르는 젊은 사람들의 음악이라는 사실을 뼈저리게 느끼게 되는 것이다. 피할 수 없는 일이기는 하나 그들도, 그리고 그런 그들을 찾아보는 나도 애잔하게만 느껴져서 '근황'을 찾아보기를 거의 그만두었다(찾아보다가 사망 소식이라도 알게 되는 날은 정말 많이 우울해지기도 한다).

 

또한 나는 '라이브'에 대해 크게 애착을 갖지 않는다. 대중음악은 기본적으로 스튜디오의 예술이다. 많은 이들이 전성기 시절에 이 나라에 별로 오지 않았으므로 어차피 수많은 라이브는 예전에는 '비디오'로 볼 수밖에 없었고 이제는 유튜브처럼 '동영상'을 보아야 한다. 그나마도 스튜디오의 완벽함을 재현해내는 라이브는 흔치 않다. 그래서 라이브 영상을 올리는 것도 크게 내키지는 않는다. 

 

요즘 우연히 보게 된 랄프 맥텔의 <런던 거리> TV 출연 라이브는 이 두 가지를 기꺼이 깨게 만들었다. 1969년에 처음 발표되어 이후 브리티시 모던 포크의 명곡으로 자리매김한 이 곡은 수많은 이들이 리메이크했고 영국에서 가장 사랑받는 포크 음악 가운데 하나가 되었다. 오래전 포크를 처음 듣기 시작했을 때도 좋아했던 곡이었고 이제 그가 칠순의 나이에 부른 이 곡도 여전히 감동적이다. 정말 좋은 곡은 아티스트의 노화나 세월의 흐름도 뛰어넘는다는 걸 알게 해준다. 그리고 나도 저 자리에 있었으면, 하는 흔치 않은 아쉬움을 불러 일으킨다. 저들과 같이 이 노래의 후렴구를 불러보고 싶지만 그런 기회는 이 나라에 없었고 앞으로도 없을 것이다... 잘 알고 있는 사실이고 어떤 식으로든 다른 방향으로 위안을 찾으며 살아왔지만 가끔씩은 그런 사실 때문에 허전해지기도 한다. 오늘은 역시, 그렇게 허전함을 느끼는 날이다...
