* 오늘 '운동권 가수'로 유명한 분이 일부 진보 내 기회주의자를 비판한 곡을 내셨다는 뉴스를 보고 이 곡이 떠올랐다. 시대 및 사상적 배경이 조금 다르긴 하지만, 1960년대 미국의 저항가수 계열로 분류할 수 있는 싱어송라이터 필 옥스의 이 곡도 '나는 진보'라고 외치는 이들의 모순과 위선을 꼬집고 있다. 아직도 안 바뀌는 미국 남부 인간들은 제정신이냐, 인종차별을 하다니, 그들은 몽땅 목을 매달아야 해, 근데 누군가 내 아이들을 '흑인'과 한 버스에 태우려 한다면 경찰이 그의 이름을 적어야겠지, 나는 이민자와 흑인을 좋아하지만 그건 어디까지나 그들이 내 이웃집에 이사 오지 않는다는 전제하에서 그럴 뿐이야, 누군 옛날에 사회주의자 아니었던 적 있냐, 근데 말야, 세월이 흘렀다구, 어쨌거나 난 진보야, 날 싫어하다니 말이 돼?(니가 이상한 거야)...

 

옥스는 젊은 나이에 비극적으로 생을 마감했고, 오랫동안 레드헌트에도 시달렸다고 한다... 물론 세월이 많이 흘렀고, 시대와 사회도 다르지만 그가 살아있다면 오늘날 이곳의 이 꼬라지를 보고 대강 아래와 같은 가사를 추가해달라고 하고 싶다...
